{Book Worm} 50 Shades of Grey

As I climbed into bed last night I was greeted with a nicely wrapped package stashed under my pillow. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was the infamous book, 50 Shades of Grey. My honey knows how to surprise me ;)

I think I may be the last woman in America to have jumped on the bandwagon but I'm hooked. Seeing as I started it during my lunch break I'm only up to chapter 2. Back to work.Wah!

{Day Tripping} CT Wine Trail #1

A few years back a couple of my friends and I tried to do the CT Wine Trail (site needs updating) but were unsuccessful in visiting all of the vineyards. This year, however, my honey and I decided to give it one more go. What could be better than exploring my home state of Connecticut while having some vino? Nothing.

To kick off our Memorial Day Weekend (as if the 5K wasn't enough) we brought along my honey's mom and got our "Passports" stamped at two locations: Bishop's Orchards Winery and Chamard Vineyards. The two are VERY different. Chamard Vineyards offered an "authentic" vineyard feel while Bishop's Orchard is primarily a farm/market. We arrived late to both of their complementary tours but just on time for the most important part, the tastings.

Let me start by saying this: I am not in any shape, way, or form a wine connoisseur. I know what I like and what I don't. I also know whether its dry, too dry, sweet, too sweet, or just right. I'm hoping that this CT wine adventure helps me develop my mid-palate. ;) If nothing else, at least I get to taste some delish local wine.

And so it begins...

Bishop's Orchards Farm Market & Winery
1355 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT 06437-2399
Cost: $6
What are they known for: Fruit wines.
My favorite: Strawberry Delight

When you pull up to Bishop's Orchards you wouldn't know they are a winery. The first thing I noticed was the large apple on top of their sign along with their greenhouse. We walked around a bit looking at their flower selection but primarily trying to find the actual vineyard and tasting room. Turns out their winery is located inside of their market.

Let me just say that I fell in love with their market. It gives off a mom & pop feel and it's full of fresh and organic food. I even bought some whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, When Pigs Fly low carb whole wheat bread, and chocolate covered raisins. I couldn't help myself.

Their winery is tucked away in the back left corner so it was a little more intimate--not by much though. But that didn't matter much. The hostess was informative and friendly. She even gave us "extra" sips. Most of their wines are apple based which wasn't really my cup of tea. However, uut of all of their fruit wines tasted I LOVED their Strawberry Delight. Yummy.

PS: They even have Llamas, Alpacas, and Goats on site ;)

Bishops Orchards

Chamard Vineyards
115 Cow Hill Rd., Clinton, CT 06413
Cost: $10 for five wines
What they are known for: Chardannays
My favorite: Gew├╝rztraminer (I butcher the name every time)

Chamard Vineyards totally lived up to my expectation of what a vineyard is "supposed" to look and feel like (at least in my head). The moment you turn onto the driveway you are greeted by vine fields flanking both sides of the gravel road. It is pretty easy to get to and there is plenty of parking. There are two main buildings on the property.

The multi-level building contains the tasting room and a brand new bistro set to open in June. Their wine bar is located in their second building, the barn. The bar hosts live music and opens to their outdoor patio. There are plenty of patio tables and picnic tables on the property.

Inside the tasting room there was a cozy seating area by a fireplace along with their tasting bar. Not sure if it was due to the Memorial Day weekend crowd or what but it was PACKED. I wish their tasting room was larger but never-the-less it was very nice. The staff member who served us was informative and pleasant. I love good service. Out of the five wines tasted I really enjoyed the Gew├╝rztraminer. So much so that we bought a bottle, along with some crackers and local cheeses, and had an impromptu picnic outside. If we had planned better I would have packed a mean picnic basket.

Chamard Vineyard also hosts many weddings. After visiting this location I TOTALLY understand why. It's beautiful and picturesque. Take a look at some of the shots below and you be the judge.

Color Me Rad 5K: DONE.

This past Memorial Day weekend I was finally able to scratch-off my #1 MUST DO item off of my "Fitness Goals" list: I ran in my first 5K!

color me rad 5k

The Color Me Rad 5K was the perfect as my first 5K. It was a colorful, no-stress type of race. The MC was hysterical, runners/walkers had smiles from ear to ear, and it was colorful. Not gonna lie, it wasn't the easiest 3.2 miles I've ever run.

Not only was it hot, most of the race was on GRAVEL. I was so focused on not falling on  that my time definitely suffered. Oh and....I ran the day before. Rookie mistake ;)

My legs felt like lead, the color mixed with the sweat impairing my vision a little, my RAD shades were dusty with color, I had to dodge a ton of walkers, the gravel was a royal pain, BUT and this is a big BUT, I finished the race running! Not stopping once. Yay me!

What: Color Me Rad 5K
Where: Rentscheler Field (Home of UConn Huskies), East Hartord, CT
When: May 26, 2012
Race Wave: 9:05am
Time: 34-35 min (I forgot to stop my timer when i crossed the finish line)

Get in My Belly! - Roasted Crispy Chickpeas

I was in the mood for something crunchy and a little salty last night but chips were out of the question. So I made roasted crispy chickpeas. YUM. I got this recipe from The Savvy Kitchen but there are a ton of variations online.

1 (15 oz.) can garbanzo beans
1 1/2 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. Lawry's seasoned salt

- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

- Drain garbanzo beans in a strainer and rinse with water. Allow all water to drain out.

- Lay garbanzo beans on a paper towel and blot/roll around until dry. Discard the skins. (*This is a labor of love.)

- Drizzle olive oil over the beans and toss around to coat. Divide the beans evenly between two baking sheets. Add vinegar to one baking sheet of beans and toss around some more (remember which are which!).

- Roast the beans for 30-40 minutes until they are golden brown and crunchy. (*I put it in for 40 and burnt a few. I'll do 30min next time)

- Remove from oven and immediately season the vinegar beans with salt.

- Season the other baking sheet of beans with Lawry's seasoned salt.

- Serve immediately.

Happy Birthday Audrey Hepburn!!!

If the lovely Miss Audrey Hepburn were still with us this would have been her 83rd birthday. Luckily for us, she's left us with movie classics like Charade, My Fair Lady, Breakfast at Tiffany's to name just a few; playing some of the most iconic characters (Holly Golightly anyone??).  I adore her.

Sole Searching {Color Me Rad 5K}

"I'm trying this new fad called uh, jogging. I believe it's jogging or yogging. it might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild."- Ron Burgundy
Yup kiddies, I'm doing it. I've FINALLY registered for my first 5k---Color Me Rad 5K to be exact. I've got just under 8 weeks to get my lungs ready. By the looks of it its going to be a blasty blast. ;) Running, crazy cornstarch colors (which i hope I don't inhale) AND I'm running it with my bestie...can it get any better? Nope.

Microwaved "baked" Apple

I know I know--a fake and baked apple???

I was running low on time and felt a major "sweet" tooth snack attack coming on. So instead of going for the sour patch kids my loverboy keeps in the kitchen cabinet I opted for an apple. I sliced the apple, sprinkled a little bit of cinnamon on it and microwaved it for 2min. Is it the same as a baked apple? No. But did it satisfy my craving? Yes.

Peanut Butter Protein Balls.

Hey gang! I'm baaaaaaaaaack ;)

So, guess what? I'm trying this thing called "getting healthy" and seeing as I am a carb junkie (and snacker) its been a little hard to stay on track. Although I've managed to get back into the groove of working out (HIIT, walking, circuit training), I still haven't mastered my diet just yet. Diet. What a dirty word. Typing the word brings up all sorts of not-so-good-feelings. You see, its not really a diet-diet, You know kind....where if I slip up I want to curl up into a ball and cry and then punish myself by looking at before and afters online. Nope. Not that kind of diet. What I'm talking about is simply eating healthier and making better choices----one spoonful (or forkful) at a time.

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, so since I'm a carb junkie and recovering snackaholic, I needed to come up with some healthier snack alternatives to keep my cravings at a minimum. After some snooping around the good old Web I stumbled upon various recipes for "Peanut Butter Protein Balls".

They had me at Balls. Ok, no they didn't. They actually had Peanut Butter.

I looked in my pantry (more like kitchen cabinets but just go with it) and to my surprise I had everything needed. So once I was done watching the spring finale of Pretty Little Liars---HOLY MONA--- had my suspicions about for the longest time but I digress, I decided to make these delish little morsels.

Here is my version: (yielded about 16 for me)
  • 1 cup of all-natural peanut butter (or you can use almond butter-yum)
  • 1 cup of organic quick oats
  • 1/4 flax seed
  • 2 stevia packets
  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
I poured all of the ingredients in a bowl and started mixing with a wooden spoon. That turned out to be a little bit of a fail so I just dug in with my bare hands and mixed it. Outcome was MUCH better. I then made 1-1/2 balls and put them in the fridge. I'm not sure how long they'll keep though.

Although the taste was good they came out a little dryer than I had hoped. Maybe I'll add some more peanut butter...

If you have protein ball recipes or any other recipes send them my way!
